The Departmental Council comprises tenured professors, researchers (including those on fixed-term contracts) and equivalent staff, the Administrative Secretary, who acts as the minute-taker, and representatives of the technical and administrative staff and the students: PhD students, postgraduate students and students enrolled on master’s degree programmes primarily relevant to the Department, as well as representatives of scholarship holders, research grant holders or those on multi-year research contracts working within the Department.

It is chaired by the Head of Department, and the elected members serve a two-year term.

The Council is the Department’s policy-making and governing body. It is responsible for defining the Department’s strategic direction with regard to scientific and teaching activities, as well as related and ancillary external activities, and for taking decisions on development and planning activities.

Among his main responsibilities is the appointment of the Head of Department:

  • sets out the general criteria for the use of the funds allocated to the Department of Research;
  • approves an annual plan for the development of research of interest to the Department;
  • submits applications for permanent teaching and research posts, and gives opinions on contract lecturers;
  • approves the proposals to establish PhD programmes within the department;
  • It draws up proposals and decides whether to support the establishment of the following centres: research centres, research and service centres, inter-university centres and service centres;
  • gives its opinion, at the request of the Academic Senate, on the proposal to establish such centres;
  • sets out the provisions governing the operation, in accordance with University regulations, of the library’s organisational structures and services – including those relating to teaching activities under the Department’s remit – and makes the necessary resources available;
  • It expresses opinions and makes proposals to the School Council regarding the planning and piloting of teaching activities; it decides on applications from lecturers to join the Department; it approves the budget and the final accounts in accordance with the provisions of the University Regulations on administration, finance and accounting; and it collaborates with the University’s governing bodies and with national planning bodies.
