Abstract

The topic of the research is in the fields of technology of materials for architecture and of technological evolution and innovation in the sector of components for construction systems, with a special focus on tools and methodologies for the analysis and assessment of performance, as well as for life-cycle analysis and assessment in connection with environmental questions.

The scientific reference is the life-cycle assessment methodology, a type of analysis that is widely used today for the analysis of the environmental impact of products and services, whether for promoting sustainable innovative solutions or fostering a market for sustainable products.

The aim of the PhD research is that of offering a methodological contribution to a method for assessing the environmental and technical performance of the life-cycle of stone materials for construction, including the analysis of certain significant impact indicators such as: land use, landscape transformation, limited abiotic resources, and impacts related to the end of the life-cycle.

Specifically, the methodology will be developed in connection to pietra leccese limestone, with the purpose of identifying innovative solutions capable of safeguarding the environment from high-impact productions with an excessive wastage of resources.

From the need of a higher degree of sustainability and considering the continuous growth of exports (in Italy and abroad) of the pietra leccese limestone, a life-cycle analysis of the said material will be carried out in order to promote a more sustainable production.

Attention will focus on landscape impact as a result of the extraction activities in the quarry, environmental impact due to the generation of waste during the phases of production, construction and disposal, the use of secondary raw materials and on the proposal of architectural systems which include the recoverability of stone components.
