Scientific interests (keywords):

The recovery and ascription to new uses of green public systems in contemporary urban landscapes; the analysis and valorization of the concept of public green spaces for the creation of the modern city; the study of phytosanitary questions for the recovery and management of green spaces in the urban landscape; protection and transformation of living evolutionary cultural landscapes; analysis of the concept of landscape according to UNESCO and the European Convention; evaluation of the questions derived from the protection of historical agrarian landscapes.

Title of the thesis: Cultural landscapes: between protection and transformation

Supervisor: Prof. Maria C. Zoppi

The research aims at investigating the various methodologies and tools adopted in several European countries for the protection of cultural landscapes determined by UNESCO, with a special focus on landscapes related to wine-producing areas, where the need for landscape protection must come to terms with the constant transformations derived from productive activities.

Six sites belonging to the category of living and evolutionary cultural landscapes were chosen: Alto Douro Wine Region, Portovenere, Cinque Terre and the Islands, Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, Val d’Orcia, and the Wachau Cultural Landscape.

The topic of productive landscapes is ideal for assessing the suitability of both the recommendations made by UNESCO and the directives of the European Landscape Convention on the subject, and especially of the suitability of the objectives, at a European level, regarding landscape planning and design.
