Building Information Modelling Laboratoryb

The Building Information Modelling Laboratory (BIM) is a specialised section of the Architectural Information Technology Lab (LIA), aimed at educational and research activities in the field of digital modelling and simulation of the processes of design, building and management of building systems. Software platforms are made available to students for practicing integration and production of the project, activities which are a part of the professional practice of the architect. This is aimed at breaching the gap between concept and engineering through an integrated and simultaneous conception of products and of the processes related to them, considering in a systematic manner all the elements of the life-cycle of the project, from the idea to the final delivery to the user.

Objectives

The Building Information Modelling Laboratory (BIM) is a specialised section of the Architectural Information Technology Lab (LIA), aimed at educational and research activities in the field of digital modelling and simulation of the processes of design, building and management of building systems.

LIA-BIM operates in support of the scientific research, teaching, knowledge transfer and service activities of the Department of Architecture, the School of Architecture, as well as of other schools with which DIDA collaborates, and the University of Florence.

Activities

LBIM offers students a workspace equipped with PC stations for digital modelling and simulation regarding the various areas of the construction system (architecture, structures, equipment and services installations) on the basis of an integral and competent design.

In particular, software platforms are made available to students for practicing integration and production of the project, activities which are a part of the professional practice of the architect.

The activities undertaken by the LBIM are supported by tutors which not only instruct students in the use of the various softwares, but also do their best to transmit an understanding of the various aspects involved in the process of the architectural project.

LBIM promotes educational activities, some paid, on parametric modelling of buildings (BIM), which are open to students, university personnel and external participants.

The activities undertaken by LBIM take place within LIA, in such a way as to favour the development of the BIM Section as an autonomous laboratory; the activities of LIA-BIM are undertaken following the rules and schedules of the LIA and in accord with the other services offered by the Laboratory.

LBIM independently appoints a Scientific Director with the purpose of better coordinating and structuring the activities of the BIM Section.
