Ceramic Cladding Design: Proposal for the development of a method based upon the design practices of tile designers.

The topic of the PhD dissertation is the culture of the project applied to ceramic objects. The aim of this research will be the analysis and further considerations regarding design practices as related to the production of ceramic tiles.

The purpose of this research is also that of verifying an approach to the project, on the basis of knowledge regarding the design practices of designers of certain sectors of product development, to be applied to the production of ceramic tiles and for its use for educational purposes in the Degree Courses in Industrial Design.

Through a review and analysis of scenarios involving innovation and management of technological, artistic, educational and research elements, it will consist in:

  • Carrying out research and determine conceptual and procedural aspects of design practices, approach ceramics as a means of artistic expression and study the history of its development.
  • Studying the companies which develop products, in order to understand the process of design and the technologies involved.
  • Promote comparative analysis of the acquired data concerning ceramics.
  • Typologies of ceramics, features, installations, productive processes and technology applied.
  • Suggest possibilities for the development of an approach to the project, based upon the design processes used by designers in product developing companies.
  • Set up parameters and reference points for the application of the proposed approach, applied to the design and development of ceramic cladding. For ceramics as an element of prestige with a high added value.
As a result of this research the transfer of knowledge and experiences from the studied sectors should define an educational model to be presented as an “Integrated Educational Plan”.
