Piazza Brunelleschi

It houses the Materials and Structures Testing Laboratory (LPMS), the CORE (Communities Resilience) and SMACS (Experimentation and Modelling for Construction and Structural Analysis) Research Units, as well as a number of academic offices.

In 1935–37, following the transfer of hospital functions to Careggi, plans were drawn up to convert the Camaldolese monastery of the Angeli, dating from 1295, into university premises, utilising the buildings of Santa Maria Nuova. The project, designed by the architect Emilio Brizzi, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, envisaged the creation of a veritable university citadel which was to house not only the various faculties but also the Rector’s Office with its administrative offices, the Aula Magna, the University Welfare Organisation, and so on. The project, which had been suspended during the war, was definitively abandoned after the war.

In 1964–65, the building connected to the east side of the large cloister and overlooking Piazza Brunelleschi was completed, intended for the Faculty of Architecture.

In the decades that followed, with the opening of the Santa Verdiana and Calenzano campuses, activities at Piazza Brunelleschi gradually declined.
