The committee’s main objective is to bridge the gap in the promotion and awareness – both within and outside the department – of the numerous and diverse research activities carried out by each lecturer and research group within the department.

The work programme will aim to:

• to organise the body of active research, in all its various forms (competitive international, national and regional research; university-based research; agreements with public and private bodies; contract research; and scientific consultancy);
• to improve the communication of these activities on the website and via the social media channels of the department and the university;
• to enhance research activities in relation to the relevant academic staff and vice versa;
• to strengthen the department’s role in the transfer of knowledge to society by expanding its activities in the form of agreements with public and private bodies, contract work and scientific consultancy, through the simplification of procedures and the promotion of in-house expertise;
• to identify appropriate indicators for defining the methods of knowledge transfer, including for the purposes of the research quality assessment (VQR);
• establish an active partnership with the International Relations Office and the university’s task force in relation to research keywords;
• promote DIDA’s teaching and research activities in relation to the activities of the EUniWell project, ‘European University of Well-being’.

Tasks to support the Departmental Management in the following areas:

1. Development of the department’s strategic policies in line with the University’s strategic plan;
2. Monitoring of strategic planning and support in drafting the department’s annual report and all reports on the activities carried out;
3. The department’s communication plan, aimed at designing and promoting communication initiatives within the institutional sphere (teaching, research, third mission), with particular emphasis on highlighting aspects of technological innovation.

The Commission has five areas of focus, to which specific actions should be linked:

1) Being recognisable and recognised

• update the existing online Atlas;
• strengthen communication about the RICMs through coordinated and collaborative efforts on social media and the web;
• raise awareness of the RICMs within the Department.

2) To promote the Department’s uniqueness and excellence in relation to the city of Florence and the Tuscan context

• to enhance the DiDA’s appeal on the international stage;
• to anchor the DiDA’s image to the strengths of the local context (Italy, Tuscany, the Metropolitan City);
• to anchor the DiDA’s image to ongoing research projects;
• to work with the ‘Communication and Image Laboratory’ to develop an effective departmental brand.

3) Strengthening our presence on the international stage

• strengthening our network of international relations;
• strengthening our network of relations to facilitate participation in cooperation programmes;
• strengthening our participation in international research programmes.

4) Helping to develop international agreements for the DIDALabs system

• linking up and working in synergy with DIDALabs with a view to internationalisation;
• developing the skills acquired during the Covid-19 pandemic to strengthen the post-Covid presence ‘to and from abroad’ via remote working);

5) To monitor and improve relations with Morocco, Albania and France with regard to the logistics of student, teaching staff and technical support staff exchanges

The committee is responsible for relations with the local community and professional bodies, as well as for third-level professional training. There are close links and potential synergies between these areas.

The committee is also responsible for teaching, liaising between the Department, degree programmes and the School of Architecture.

Third-level training: Postgraduate schools, Master’s programmes, professional development courses, advanced training courses:

• initiatives to raise external awareness of the programme’s content and outcomes;
• initiatives to promote the integration and expansion of the programme in response to requests arising from our relationship with professional bodies or the local community.

Initiatives:

• an event to promote the current range of courses in collaboration with the Florence Institute of Architects;
• round-table discussions with the Florence Institute of Architects on specific topics with a view to expanding the range of courses;
• a Europe-wide survey on existing third-level education programmes.

Relations with the Local Community

Initiatives to strengthen the university’s ‘third mission’, by linking up with the University’s activities and building on our range of specialisms:

• promoting research to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills to local businesses and public authorities;
• forging links with local institutions (both public and private).

Initiatives:

• to establish an overview of the institutions, businesses and local authorities with which Dida has a relationship;
• to strengthen dialogue with the Regional Government, as our primary point of contact, in order to ‘promote’ all our areas of expertise and obtain guidance on requests from the local area.

Professional Bodies

Initiatives to foster interaction with professional bodies, with a view to consolidating and expanding our training provision.

The Commission will be responsible for:

• establishing the general criteria for the coordinated and optimal use of the department’s premises at its various locations (S. Verdiana, S. Niccolò-Palazzo Vegni-S. Teresa, S. Clemente), and of the department’s resources and equipment;
• monitoring the mapping of the allocation and use of spaces and assessing the functional reorganisation of the use of these spaces;
• verificare la disponibilità di spazi-studio per gli afferenti al dipartimento DiDA che ne sono sprovvisti: stanze docenti, aule studio per gli studenti, locali di stoccaggio di materiale di lavoro degli studenti quali plastici o altro materiale di lavoro;
• individuare spazi per convegni, esposizioni e mostre all’interno delle strutture DiDA; operazioni, nel loro complesso mirate a favorire il dibattito culturale sull’architettura e la ricerca architettonica e a divulgare le attività svolte dagli afferenti al dipartimento DiDA;
• valutare la possibilità di reperire spazi possibilmente stabili (quale era ad esempio il SESV) per le attività di cui al punto precedente, come potrebbe forse essere l’ex Chiesa del plesso di S. Verdiana;
• valutare la possibilità di reperire spazi per riattivare le MAD (mostre dell’attività didattica) quali strumenti puntuali di divulgazione dell’offerta formativa e della ricerca del Dipartimento e le mostre per l’orientamento alle iscrizioni ai Laboratori;
• valutare la riorganizzazione ed accorpamento dei DIDALabs, il sistema degli acquisti, il bilancio finanziario e le risorse dei singoli Laboratori;
• valutare eventuali interventi finalizzati a migliorare la sicurezza all’interno delle strutture dipartimentali;
• monitorare il sistema dei DiDALabs per quanto riguarda gli spazi e la sicurezza, gli acquisti di attrezzature;
• coordinare l’acquisto dei D.P.I. per il dipartimento e per il sistema dei laboratori.

The working group operates within the framework of the Department’s internationalisation policies, with the aim of monitoring the University’s position in the main university rankings and promoting measures designed to improve indicators of quality and scientific visibility.

To this end, it provides strategic guidance through meetings dedicated to identifying the most relevant international journals in the various academic disciplines, steering the editorial choices of researchers, research fellows, scholarship holders, contract staff and PhD students towards publications with a high scientific impact.

The group also contributed to the Department’s promotional activities by identifying and recommending to the University’s offices academics and representatives from European and non-EU universities to be involved in the reputation surveys used in international rankings, with a view to enhancing the visibility and standing of the University of Florence.

The committee aims to inform, raise awareness and actively engage the student and academic community of the School of Architecture – DIDA on the issues of sustainable development and ecological transition, encouraging the adoption of best practices and responsible behaviour through regular meetings and open seminars. 

In particular, it liaises with the University’s Green Office, both by promoting and monitoring national and international research projects and activities that explore innovative materials, technologies and processes across the various aspects of sustainable development; encouraging training and awareness-raising activities in the areas of promoting energy saving, energy production from renewable sources, the recovery and reuse of waste materials, the application of bio-based materials and nature-based solutions, and the rational use of water, natural resources and green spaces.

The committee promotes initiatives aimed at strengthening the principles of fairness, equal opportunities and integration. It provides guidance and support in the formulation of policies and measures relating to inclusion and the promotion of diversity.

• It encourages participation in national and international cooperation projects on social, cultural and academic issues.
• It promotes awareness-raising and training initiatives aimed at the academic community.
• It supports the identification of best practices to combat discrimination and inequality.
• It collaborates with other University bodies and departments to implement agreed strategies.
• It monitors the effectiveness of the actions undertaken, including through qualitative and quantitative indicators.
• It contributes to fostering an inclusive and open culture, thereby strengthening the Department’s social role.

The working group is working on formalising the process management procedures underpinning the activities of the Department’s numerous journals.

It monitors the operational processes involved in producing the journals. It assists the scientific editors, scientific committees and editorial boards.

It contributes to the procedures for the periodic accreditation of the journals with the Ministry.

It supervises editorial processes and relations with the university press, Florence University Press.

The working group is responsible for analysing, monitoring and examining in depth the reforms to the pre-tenure system in higher education, with a particular focus on the opportunities offered by postgraduate contracts and the pathways to academic careers. In this context, the group examines and proposes criteria for a more effective structuring of competitive funding calls, with a view to promoting transparency, fairness, the recognition of merit, gender equality and inclusivity.

It is also responsible for gathering and organising information relating to current regulatory measures, helping to interpret them in practical terms for the departmental context. In this context, the group also keeps the Departmental Council informed of the progress of the reforms, drawing in particular on the input of the coordinator at the CUN.
