The University of Florence will establish a Doctoral School in Design Studies and Cultures in 2025, organised by the Department of Architecture.

“The School is committed to ensuring that the PhD programme provides doctoral candidates with the necessary skills to carry out high-level research at universities, public bodies or private organisations, including with a view to accessing careers in public administration and integrating innovative professional pathways. Doctoral training must be consistent with the principles and guidelines agreed at European level, as set out in the current Ministerial Decree.

The School promotes and coordinates doctoral training in design studies and cultures, fostering exchange through close collaboration with other relevant disciplinary areas and with national and international institutions.” (Regulations of the “Doctoral School in Design Studies and Cultures”, Art. 2 – DR 608/2025).

Precisely to ensure maximum openness towards diverse disciplinary expertise and the inclusion of other doctoral programmes, a concise and inclusive name is proposed, one which at the same time makes its position within the field of design fully recognisable.

The launch of the Doctoral School in Design Studies and Cultures, the second doctoral school following the School of Social Sciences, also forms part of the aim to establish an intermediate level – in terms of the initiatives and services offered to doctoral students – between university-level coordination and the doctoral programmes.

The Doctoral School currently comprises the three active doctoral programmes at DIDA:

• the CdD-A Sustainability and Innovation for the Design of the Built Environment and Product Systems (comprising the following curricula: Urban and Territorial Planning, Architectural Technology, Landscape Architecture, Design);
• the CdD-B programme in Architecture, Design, Knowledge and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (comprising the following specialisations: Architectural and Urban Design, Surveying and Representation, Structures and Restoration of Architecture and Cultural Heritage, History of Architecture and the City);
• the CdD-C in Urban Future Studies, in collaboration with the Department of ‘Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies’.
