Scientific research in sport has undergone a profound transformation in recent decades. A systemic approach, which integrates the physical, mental and cultural dimensions of physical activity, is opening up new frontiers in our understanding of human movement. This new research concept draws inspiration from the ancient essence of the Greek gymnasium, a place of physical, intellectual and moral training.
The HUMAN-CENTRE GYM.NOW.SIUM_SPORT and CULTURE Inter-university Research Centre aims to promote, organise and coordinate scientific research, innovation and technology transfer through collaborative projects focused on sport and culture. Sport and culture, as fundamental pillars of human and social development, help to shape individuals who are aware, responsible and fully integrated into society. University research, through in-depth studies and interdisciplinary analysis, enables us to understand the links between these fields and to identify new strategies for promoting them.
The Centre prioritises collaboration with stakeholders in the worlds of sport and culture: public institutions, sports federations, cultural associations, private companies and members of the public work together to create a virtuous ecosystem in which sport and culture serve as tools for individual and collective growth. The Centre’s value lies in the cross-disciplinary expertise of its research groups and its interdisciplinary collaborations, which are essential for developing innovative solutions, including through technologies applied to marketing, communication, sporting and cultural events, corporate social responsibility, education, employee welfare, social policies, training, facility analysis and sports tourism.
HUMAN-CENTRE GYM.NOW.SIUM_SPORT and CULTURE stems from the collaboration between the universities of Florence, Pavia and Siena, each with specific expertise in sport, culture and the social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach is a crucial strength in tackling the challenges facing the sports sector from various angles, taking into account technical, social, economic and cultural aspects. The Centre will help to promote a culture of sport and raise public awareness of the importance of sport for physical, social and cultural wellbeing, through scientific and public outreach events aimed at the community. With its establishment, the Italian sporting and cultural landscape is enriched by a state-of-the-art facility, set to become a driving force in the sector, contributing to the sustainable growth of the sports industry.
The Human-Centre GYM.NOW. SIUM Inter-University Research Centre is an innovative organisation born out of a collaboration between the universities of Florence, Siena and Pavia. Its aim is to promote research and innovation in the fields of sport and culture, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that brings together researchers and professionals from a range of disciplines, including economics, sociology, sports science, law and medicine.
