In recent years, resilience has been establishing itself as a tool for analysis, monitoring and intervention at various levels of observation (buildings, infrastructure, small or large urban centres, the wider territory). Aimed at measuring a system’s capacity to restore its efficiency following a catastrophic event, resilience shifts the focus of system analysis from an assessment of its integrity to one of its efficiency.
Assessing a system’s functionality inevitably involves analysing various disciplinary fields, capable of describing and contextualising not only the quality of the structure designed to deliver the service, but the service itself, including its users and their distribution across the territory, as well as the technical specifications and statistical analyses aimed at predicting its future developments.
The ‘COmmunities REsilience’ research unit focuses on assessing the resilience of complex urban areas and their subsystems within a multidisciplinary context. The analysis of urban areas is a highly topical issue; traditionally addressed within specific thematic areas, in recent years it has adopted a broad and multidisciplinary framework. Indeed, only a comprehensive view of the issues specific to urban centres as a whole allows for the planning of effective and sustainable regeneration, planning, maintenance or safety measures.

- Multidisciplinary analyses of strategic buildings and the development of analytical tools designed to support the planning of interventions;
- The creation of multi-level databases at urban scale and the subsequent production of thematic maps;
- The development of analytical systems for assessing seismic risk in complex urban areas;
- Analyses aimed at mitigating seismic risk in both specific and complex systems.
